NEW YORK--Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade, which has raised
$10 million through the sales of its $2 pink ribbon pin, has now
introduced a pink-enameled ballpoint pen. The new pen, which bears
the ribbon motif on its clip, will be available in October, 1995,
at a cost of $3.
The pink ribbon has been selected by the breast cancer community
as the international symbol of hope and support for those affected
by breast cancer.
Proceeds from pen sales, as with ongoing sales of the pink ribbon
pin, will go toward supporting community-based programs across
the country. These programs are dedicated to increasing awareness
of breast cancer and improving access to early detection services,
especially for lower income, minority, and older women, and others
who are medically underserved.
Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness crusade has been working since
October, 1993, to educate women about breast health. The crusade
has funded more than 125 community programs across the United
States. In addition, Avon representatives have distributed 32
million educational brochures in a woman-to-woman outreach effort.
Early on, Avon developed an innovative public/private/nonprofit
partnership with the YWCA of the USA, Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations
(NABCO), and National Cancer Institute, with the goal of improving
women's access to breast cancer services.
