WASHINGTON--The House Budget Committee proposed a plan that calls
for a 5% reduction in funding for NIH in fiscal 1996, which amounts
to about $1 billion out of a total NIH budget of $11.8 billion.
The Appropriations Committee rather than the Budget Committee
will make the final decision, but the movement to cut federal
spending enough to balance the budget and finance a tax cut is
likely to significantly affect the outcome.
