BUFFALO, New YorkGerald P. Murphy, MD, DSc, seventh director of
Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), died suddenly, January 21,
2000, in Tel Aviv, Israel, while attending an International Union
Against Cancer meeting in his role as secretary-general. Dr. Murphy
was 65. He began his career at RPCI in 1967 when he was appointed
associate director for clinical affairs and chief of the Departments
of Urology and Experimental Surgery. He served as director of RPCI
from 1970 to 1985.
After leaving RPCI, Dr. Murphy served as professor of urology and
director of the Urologic Cancer Research Laboratory at the University
of Buffalo, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, and
director and chief operating officer of the Pacific Northwest
Research Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Bridget, and six children.
