National Breast Cancer Month Spotlights Awareness Efforts

WASHINGTON--Zeneca Pharmaceuticals and its National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) co-sponsors have presented First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton with the Government Leadership Award for her outstanding initiative in launching efforts to educate women about mammography.

Special awards were given to three sets of "partners" who have played pivotal roles in breast cancer awareness: former First Lady Betty Ford and her daughter Susan Ford Bales; Nancy Brinker and, posthumously, her sister, Susan G. Komen; and Harvey Kushner and, posthumously, his wife, Rose.

Community outreach programs honored were Carilion Health System, Roanoke, Va; Emory University School of Medicine; and Hartford Hospital.

Awards for achievement in providing employees access to breast cancer screening and education at the worksite went to Metrolina Outreach Mammography, Charlotte, NC, and Tri Valley Growers, San Francisco.

In the print media category, Oncology Times received an award for its stories on the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.

Primary Care & Cancer, under the editorial direction of James McCarthy and published by PRR, Inc. (which also publishes the journal Oncology and Oncol-ogy News International), was honored for its Breast Self-Examination Guide, and John Gentile, Jr., president of PRR, won an Awareness Achievement Award (see photograph below), which he accepted on behalf of the entire staff.
