GALVESTON, Tex--W. Stratford May, Jr., MD, PhD, has been appointed
the first director of the Sealy Center for Oncology and Hematology
at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He was
also named the Bill and Louise Bauer Distinguished Professor in
Cancer Research and director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology
in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Dr. May will be responsible for carrying out the center's goals
to discover new therapies and promote research. The center will
initially have nine principal investigators, each with his or
her own lab. Already recruited are Dr. Lei Xiao, who is researching
how a gene is turned on and off inside a specific cell; Dr. Brian
Davis, who is studying viral vectors for gene therapy; and Dr.
Takahiko Ito, who is working on signal transduction.
