Prostate Cancer Resource Guide Provides Comprehensive Info

BALTIMORE, Md—The American Foundation for Urologic Disease (AFUD) has developed and published a comprehensive resource guide for prostate cancer patients, their families and friends, and health care professionals. The publication contains detailed information about prostate cancer, as well as compilations of organizations, publications, and other resources related to the disease.

“As a survivor of prostate cancer, I understand how vital it is to have information and resources,” says Hovey S. Dabney, AFUD Board Chairman. “When my cancer was diagnosed four years ago, my family, my health care team, and I earnestly sought out current, accurate information. The Foundation has designed this publication as a tool that will provide information and lead people to credible, authoritative resources about prostate cancer.”

AFUD President Jay Gillenwater, MD, of the University of Virginia Health Science Center, says that the resource guide “will fill a critical information void for patients, their families, and health care providers that should help improve the treatment and management of prostate cancer.”

The content of the resource guide begins with a chapter on “Treatment Choices for Localized Prostate Cancer,” which is the reproduction of a patient education publication produced by the AFUD’s Prostate Health Council. Included in this chapter is a detailed definition of prostate cancer, explanation of disease stages, a detailed description of treatment options for localized prostate cancer, and a glossary of prostate cancer terms.

Also included in the guide are tips from survivors; questions that patients should ask their health care providers; information on insurance coverage issues; home health care advice; nutrition information; a compilation of support and advocacy organizations; background on FDA and NCI resources for prostate cancer patients, including information on NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers; and background on American Cancer Society programs aimed at prostate cancer patients and a list of state chapters, including addresses and phone numbers.

The 10-year-old AFUD is a nonprofit, patient-based organization dedicated to the prevention and cure of urologic disease through the expansion of research, education, awareness, and advocacy.
