David G. Mutch, MD, has been elected president of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. Dr. Mutch is the director of the division of gynecologic oncology and the Ira and Judith Gall Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Allan R. Escher, DO, from Tampa’s H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute has been elected chair of the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Escher, who is an instructor in the department of anesthesiology at the cancer center, will serve a one-year term as chair.
Deborah Dunsire, MD, has been elected 2009 Woman of the Year by the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association. Dr. Dunsire is the
president and CEO of Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, based in Cambridge, Mass.
The Oncology Nursing Society has bestowed its 2009 Lectureship Awards on Terri Armstrong, PhD, RN; Ann M. Berger, PhD, RN (below); and Mary K. Hughes, MS, RN. All three will address the 2009 ONS Congress in San Antonio in April. Dr. Armstrong (above) will deliver the clinical lectureship on the diagnosis and treatment of glial tumors. Dr. Berger will give the state-of-the-science lecture on reducing negative outcomes related to sleep disturbances in cancer patients. Ms. Hughes will present the ONS Foundation Mara Morgensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture on sexuality and cancer.
The 2008 Alberto Sols Award for outstanding research in health sciences has been given to Maria A. Blasco, PhD, director of the molecular oncology program at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre in Madrid. Dr. Blasco’s area of expertise is the role of telomeres and telomerase in cancer and aging. The ASCO Cancer Foundation granted Merit Awards to international researchers at the 2009 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium. This year’s recipients are Shaun P. Tolan, MB, ChB, and Alfonso Gomez-Iturriaga, MD, from Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto; Michael R. Humphreys, MD, from the University of Toronto; Ramachandran Venkitaraman, MD, from London’s Royal Marsden Hospital; Katharine Shim, MD, from the London Regional Cancer Program; Caroline Veuillen, PhD, from the Institut Paoli-Calmettes in Marseille, France; Kyung Seok Han, MD, at the National Cancer Center in Goyang, Korea; and Ravindran Kanesvaran, MD, at the National Cancer Centre in Singapore.
