American Society of Hematology | Dear Colleague:
In recent years, experts in the field of hematologic malignancies have seen a panoply of drugs gain a place in our treatment armamentarium. Some of the breakthroughs include the approval of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and peripheral lymphoma; the application of novel alkylating agents, such as bendamustine (Treanda), in CLL and various lymphomas; and the incorporation of dasatinib (Sprycel) for treating chronic myeloid leukemia patients who prove resistant to imatinib (Gleevec).
We now find ourselves focusing on how to design the most effective strategies, including drug sequencing, to maximize benefit for our patients. The 2010 American Society of Hematology meeting (ASH) offers the chance to delve deeper into the best ways to maximize treatment for our patients. Join Oncology NEWS International for onsite reports from ASH 2010 as we bring you a bird’s eye view of the research, trials, scientific advances, and controversies that are changing the way hematologic malignancies are managed and treated.
Check back here daily during the meeting and watch your inbox for our exciting reports from the ASH 2010 meeting. |
Survey reveals the general public knows little about lymphoma
November 22, 2010
The saying that “knowledge is power” holds especially true when it comes to a lymphoma diagnosis, and there are best practices for clinicians who want to fully educate their patients. Presentations at ASH 2010 offer data and advice on how to approach—and improve—education efforts among clinicians and patients.
From the ONI archives: CML patients’ molecular response to nilotinib continues to deepen over time
August 10, 2010
Eighteen-month follow up supports lower-dose nilotinib as the new standard of care for newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia. The ENESTnd trial (Evaluating Nilotinib Efficacy and Safety in Clinical Trials of Newly Diagnosed Ph+CML Patients) enrolled 846 patients at 217 sites in 35 countries. Timothy P. Hughes, MD, MBBS, will present an update to the ENESTnd trial at ASH 2010.
From the ONI archives: Ofatumumab turns in encouraging results in pretreated CLL
June 22, 2010
Standard therapy options are limited for patients with refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia, with or without lymphadenopathy, and the results are generally poor. Ofatumumab (Arzerra), a novel human CD20 monoclonal antibody, could be the answer for improving outcomes in this patient population. Lead investigator William G. Wierda, MD, PhD, will share the final analysis of the results from this international study at ASH 2010.
From the ONI archives: Should low-dose induction dexamethasone be standard of care in multiple myeloma?
June 19, 2009
A phase III study by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma showed that induction therapy with low-dose dexamethasone plus lenalidomide (Revlimid) improved survival, compared with high-dose dexamethasone plus lenalidomide. Look for updates on treatment regimens that include dexamethasone in multiple myeloma at ASH 2010 from Sagar Lonial, MD, and S. Vincent Rajkumar, MD.
