ABOUT THE ACTIVITY
This activity is based on articles and reports in ONCOLOGY Nurse Edition. It is developed from an identifi ed educational need for information about practical management issues in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. This activity has been developed and approved under the direction of CME LLC.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After reading this supplemental issue of ONCOLOGY, participants should be able to:
• Review different psychological challenges that cancer patients face following treatment and describe techniques to use during medical visits to determine how survivors are faring psychosocially.
• Understand how survivors and their healthcare providers may access resources and educational materials to ease psychosocial problems and discuss how medical personnel may appropriately refer patients for psychological services.
• Appreciate graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) as a common complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in which functional immune cells in the transplanted marrow recognize the recipient as “foreign” and mount an immunologic attack.
• Discuss advances in management of GVHD and ongoing research to reduce the symptoms of this phenomenon.
