When Cancer Pain Breaks Through, What Can You Do?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After reading this issue of ONCOLOGY Nurse Edition, participants should be able to:
• Describe the factors that place patients with solid tumors at increased risk for bacterial infection and complications from infectious processes.
• Outline evaluation of the cancer patient for a suspected infection.
• Summarize pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management and prevention strategies for bacterial infection in adult patients with solid tumors.

This series of case presentations (five individual cases) will provide oncologists and other healthcare professionals with strategies for evaluating evidence-based data on the latest treatments in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) and the application of that data into the development of individualized approaches to care, including overcoming resistance, in order to optimize management and outcomes for patients.
