The world’s first clinically operational molecular imager with lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) technologythe biograph LSO, manufactured by Siemens Medical Solutionshas produced a precisely registered, combined positron-emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) image in 7 minutes at the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital. The biograph LSO imager uses the high-speed properties of LSO as the PET scintillator to provide shorter scan times and unmatched patient throughput.
The biograph LSO merges three componentsthe ECAT ACCEL PET scanner, the SOMATOM Emotion spiral CT scanner, and syngo multimodality softwareinto a powerful scanning device that creates a precisely registered molecular image in 15 minutes or less. The resulting image makes it possible for oncologists and other health-care providers to view detailed anatomy and the biological processes of internal organs and living tissue at the molecular level in a single, noninvasive diagnostic procedure.
In addition to the biograph LSO, the biograph is available with bismuth germanate (BGO) crystal technologya proven and economic scintillator for quality high-resolution PET imaging. The first commercial installation of the biograph with BGO technology was completed last fall at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan.
