A second omnibus health-care billthis one called the Public Health Improvement Act (H.R. 2498)was passed quietly at the end of the 2000 session, with a prostate cancer section included. That section was originally a free-standing bill called the Prostate Cancer Research and Prevention Act (S. 1243). Sponsored by Sen. Bill Frist, md (R-Tenn.), the legislation instructs the CDC to inaugurate a grant program aimed at finding out how men and their physicians decide whether prostate cancer screening is appropriate for them. In the future, there could be grants for screening of low-income men.
