RESEARCH REPORT Dave Levitan A new analysis of four large European trials of cutaneous melanoma patients showed a substantial survival advantage for women, most likely explained by underlying biologic differences. The study included pooled results from four European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer trials comprising 2,672 patients with stage I/II melanoma. The study results were published recently in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. RESEARCH REPORT Dave Levitan The addition of sorafenib to isolated limb infusion therapy with melphalan did not improve responses in a new phase I trial of patients with in-transit extremity melanoma. RESEARCH REPORT Anna Azvolinsky The identification of a driver mutation in the BRAF gene found in approximately 40% of metastatic melanoma patients and the subsequent approval last year of the targeted BRAF inhibitor, vemurafenib, has resulted in a surge of both clinical and laboratory research. Researchers have been actively analyzing the mechanisms of resistance to BRAF inhibitors, attempting to identify the next-generation therapies and novel combination treatments to stop further cancer progression.
