RESEARCH REPORT Leah Lawrence The FTO gene, which prior research has shown is strongly associated with obesity and body mass index (BMI), contains variants associated with an increased risk for malignant melanoma, according to the results of a genome-wide association study conducted by the GenoMEL consortium.
RESEARCH REPORT Leah Lawrence The MEK inhibitor MEK162 is the first agent to show some activity in patients with NRAS- and BRAF-mutated advanced melanoma, according to the conclusions of a phase II study, evaluating the drug’s safety and efficacy.
REVIEW ARTICLE Sabino Zani, Bryan M. Clary; ONCOLOGY Vol. 25 No. 12 With the potential for therapeutic durability and a small chance of cure, surgical resection may offer improved survival compared to other therapeutic modalities. This review summarizes the existing literature that addresses the topic of metastasectomy in patients with melanoma and breast cancer.
REVIEW ARTICLE Sasha O. Joseph, Franco M. Muggia; ONCOLOGY Vol. 26 No. 10 We describe areas where major inroads were initially achieved by targeting angiogenesis and by unraveling pathways in the heterogeneous tumors of mesenchymal origin.
Mohs surgery has been well-established as the gold standard for the treatment of BCCs and SCCs. And, as described in this article, preliminary reports suggest that it may play an equally important role in the management of several other cutaneous malignancies.

Patients having locoregional or metastatic melanoma have a poor prognosis, with 50% to 100% of patients dying from the disease within 5 years. Current chemotherapy regimens offer limited benefits to these patients, and more effective and less toxic treatments are needed.
The combination treatment regimen of
GM-CSF and IL-2 with or without autologous vaccine used adjuvantly
appears to benefit high-risk melanoma patients; further clinical testing
of this regimen is warranted.
Vaccines are a promising but still experimental treatment for melanoma.
They are intended to stimulate immune responses against melanoma
and by so doing, increase resistance against and slow the progression
of this cancer.
