DETROIT--The Michigan Cancer Foundation has received a $15 million gift from Peter Karmanos, Jr., chairman and CEO of Compuware Corporation, Farmington Hills, Michigan.
The gift, the largest ever to fight cancer in Michigan, will benefit the integrated cancer system formed by the Michigan Cancer Foundation, the Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center of Metropolitan Detroit, and the cancer programs of the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University.
The system is now called the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in memory of Mr. Karmanos' first wife who died of breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 46. It is the only nationally recognized center to be named for a woman.
The Institute, headed by William P. Peters, MD, PhD, encompasses 1,600 employees at 35 offices and sites in southeastern Michigan.
