NEW YORK—Cancer Care, Inc.’s 18th Annual Human Services Award Dinner honored four outstanding champions in the fight to help people with cancer and their families. More than 750 guests attended the black-tie event at the Waldorf-Astoria, which was hosted by Dana Tyler of WCBS-TV.
Fred Hassan, chairman and CEO of Pharmacia Corporation, was the recipient of Cancer Care’s 2001 Human Services Award. This honor recognizes individuals who have shown exceptional dedication and leadership for the benefit of people with cancer and their loved ones.
In addition to its development of cancer agents, Pharmacia has helped Cancer Care reach tens of thousands of patients, caregivers, and professionals through its support of the agency’s educational teleconferences and its website.
Cancer Care’s Beacon Award was presented to Avon Products Foundation in recognition of Avon’s commitment to the AVONCares program, an ongoing partnership with Cancer Care. Avon president and chief operating officer Susan Kropf accepted the award.
AVONCares, a program for under-served women, was established at Cancer Care in March of 2000 with an unprecedented gift from the Avon Products Foundation, through funds raised by the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.
The Avon Products Foundation has awarded $4.2 million to Cancer Care for AVONCares since the program’s inception a little more than 1 year ago. At the award presentation, Ms. Kropf announced an additional $1 million in recognition of this program’s success.
The Fashion Leadership Award was presented to Wayne Meichner, executive vice president, merchandising, at Saks Fifth Avenue. Mr. Meichner’s vision and dedication led to an intensive commitment to women’s health issues, particularly a variety of cancer initiatives.
Cancer Care’s Regulus Award, honoring key figures who utilize the media to bring information, hope, and enlightenment to people whose lives have been touched by cancer, was presented to model and activist Christy Turlington for her powerful voice in the agency’s Lung Cancer Awareness Campaign.
