Operationalizing the First Dose and Building the Oncology and Eye Care Partnership
Practical guidance for starting belantamab: confirm eligibility, coordinate ophthalmology exams, manage reversible eye toxicity with dose holds, and educate patients for confident dosing.
The faculty discuss how a community practice can prepare to deliver belantamab mafodotin. One panelist starts by confirming at least 2 prior lines of therapy, then sets expectations with the physician, ophthalmologist, pharmacist, and patient, stressing that ocular toxicities are expected and that dose interruptions are acceptable. The eye examination happens before the patient sees the oncologist, and the keratopathy and visual acuity (KVA) form is brought to the oncologist. A panelist describes how to manage toxicities based on grading. A second panelist describes having a close relationship with a local ophthalmology group as well as having a network of eye care specialists available through the provider of the medication. The moderator discusses the importance of patient education and closed-loop communication.
