President Bush Names New Chairs for Two Cancer Advisory Groups
WASHINGTON-President Bush has named LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., MD, of Howard University College of Medicine, to head the President’s Cancer Panel (PCP), and John E. Niederhuber, MD, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, to chair the National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB).
WASHINGTONPresident Bush has named LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., MD, of Howard University College of Medicine, to head the President’s Cancer Panel (PCP), and John E. Niederhuber, MD, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, to chair the National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB).
Dr. Leffall, the Charles R. Drew Professor and chairman of the surgery department at Howard, replaces Harold P. Freeman, MD, as PCP chairperson. Dr. Freemanpresident, chief executive officer, and director of surgery at North General Hospital in New York Citywill remain as a member of the panel.
Mr. Bush also appointed professional bicyclist Lance E. Armstrong, four-time winner of the Tour de France race and a testicular cancer survivor, as the PCP’s third member.
Dr. Niederhuber, director, University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center and the medical school’s assistant dean for oncology, was named to a 2-year term on the NCAB.
Other new board members are Moon Shao-Chuang Chen, Jr., PhD, MPH, professor and chair, Division of Health Behavior & Health Promotion, School of Public Health, Ohio State University; Kenneth H. Cowan, MD, PhD, director, University of Nebraska’s Epply Cancer Center, Omaha; Jean B. deKernion, MD, professor and chairman of urology, UCLA School of Medicine; Marlys Popma, executive director, Republican Party of Iowa; Franklyn G. Prendergast, MD, PhD, director, Mayo Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rochester, Minnesota; and Lydia G. Ryan, MSN, PNP, service line clinical director, hematology-oncology/stem cell, Children’s Health-care of Atlanta AFLAC Cancer Center.
